Escaping from a lifetime of abuse, Ismae finds sanctuary at the convent of St. Mortain where young women are trained as assassins to serve the god of Death. Named as the apprentice to the mistress of poisons, Ismae is educated in the womanly arts and trained to wield every weapon imaginable. Eager to prove her loyalty and worth, Ismae faithfully completes her assignments and discovers the god of Death’s marque upon those she is ordered to assassinate. When the mysterious Gavriel Duval interrupts one of Ismae’s assignments, she is thrust into the high court to protect the Duchess of Brittany and to find those that bear the marque. The struggle for power at court ensues as spies lurk around every corner, alliances are made in secret and traitors conspire to overthrow the Duchess. Soon, Ismae realizes that carrying out an order without question is extremely complex especially when the tempting, but possibly treasonous Gavriel is involved. Ismae must rely on her instincts, skills, and her heart, as the intrigue at court proves to be lethal.
