Two books that focus on books and technology have been selected for the 12th annual Silicon Valley Reads program in 2014.  All residents of the 15 cities in Silicon Valley are invited to engage in reading and dialogue on the theme “Books & Technology: Friends or Foes?” The two books that will be the centerpiece of this theme are The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains by Nicholas Carr and Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.  Both authors will participate in the Silicon Valley Reads Kick-Off on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Heritage Theater in Campbell. In the months that follow, Silicon Valley residents will enjoy a variety of programs with the authors at community libraries and other venues.

The Shallows Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore

  • The Shallows is a nonfiction book that examines the effects that computers and the Internet have on the way we think and read, expanding the topic into a compelling exploration of the Internet’s intellectual and cultural consequences.  Citing neuroscience discoveries, Carr makes the case that the technologies now used to find, store and share information can literally reroute neural pathways.
  • Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore is a novel set in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, where an unemployed web designer stumbles on a quirky bookstore with an unusual inventory of books.  Thinking the store must be a front for something larger, main character Clay Jannon persuades his friends to share their technology skills and join him on a literary adventure that takes them far outside the walls of the bookstore.

Companion books for children that relate to the theme “Books & Technology: Friends or Foes?” have also been selected for Silicon Valley Reads 2014.  They are:

  • The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, written by William Joyce
  • Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
  • Reading Makes You Feel Good by Todd Parr

Stay tuned for more announcements about upcoming Silicon Valley Reads 2014 events!
