You may have heard about changes associated with the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 passed by Congress on January 1, 2013 and signed into law by the President the next day. How might this affect you? For one thing, if you are a single filer making over $400,000 or a joint filer making over $450,000 per year, congratulations – the federal government deems you a wealthy American and increases your marginal tax rate from 2012’s high of 35% to 39.6%. Other changes effective January 1, 2013 include adjustments to the payroll tax, personal exemptions, itemized deductions, taxes on investments, etc. These changes will not necessarily affect your 2012 taxes, but some prudent planning for the current year is always a good idea.
