September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Santa Clara County Library District joins with public libraries nationwide to make sure that our students have the most important school supply of all – a free library card.

Resources at the Santa Clara County Libraries are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and services that support academic achievement

Students can use their library cards from home, too.  The library offers access to important educational resources, like online encyclopedias, ebooks, and Brainfuse or Learning Express, online tutoring and test preparation services available on the library’s website.

Santa Clara County Library District provides all types of students with the tools they need to succeed. With a library card, students can enjoy exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun, and resources that they can access from the library or from home. It is for these reasons that a library card is most important school supply of all.  This September, open the door to a world of possibilities for yourself and for the student in your life, and sign up for a library card.

$80.00 Fee for certain patrons

Will be any change to the fee charged to patrons that do not live in certain county cities?

Non-district resident fee

Unfortunately there is no change. The fee started in 2011 when the State of California eliminated public library funding for reciprocal borrowing. That funding has not been restored.

free library card for students?

Yet you don't allow college students that go to De Anza college or Foothill college and live in a different city to get a free library card. I had to pay for one.

Free student cards

There are free cards for local students up to grade 12. Also individuals that volunteer 60 hours per year for the library receive a free card. Fortunately college students have access to both their school's library and to their city's public library. Since 2011, due to complete elimination of state funding for reciprocal borrowing, the Santa Clara County Library District charges a non-resident fee of $80.00 for a library card. Everyone is still welcome to use materials in the library, access free wi-fi, and attend library programs. Thank you for choosing to get a card and I hope you are happy with our services and collection.
